Body Type

Knowing your body type is essential for picking out flattering items of clothing, which can prove to be a challenge. This guide will provide different body shapes and various tips on how to make whatever you have look amazing.

Banana/Rectangle/Athletic: Characteristics of a Rectangle (also lovingly known as a banana or athletic) body type is the even distribution of weight throughout the body. Your bust and hips are approximately the same width, and you have little to no waist definition. Luckily for you, you can get away with wearing most garments and outfits. What the typical Rectangular body shape needs is to break up their silhouette and add some dimension to their body. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways, by wearing various cuts and shapes, different prints and textures, and by accessorizing! You’ll also want to add some hip definition, so a closet essential will be the waist belt. Pick a simple one that’s also dark in color. Too much detail or light colors can add unnecessary pounds, which nobody needs. Items to have in your closet include:

  • Skinny or flare jeans (though you could wear just about anything)
  • Nipped tops: basically anything that is nipped either at your waist or your bust will add definition
~ Other tops should include ruffles, ruched sleeve tops, or things with bows, or something to add detail to your upper body
(ruched sleeve top)
  • Belts. These will be your best wardrobe investment, so pick something that’s dark to maximize the slimming effect.
  • A-Line skirts (though they have to have some volume to look good on you). Girly skirts and dresses will give you a feminine shape

Apple: This type of body shape typically has a fuller chest and less waist definition. Other characteristics include narrow hips, and slimmer arms. However, you’ll likely have more weight around the midsection, so you’ll want to “skim” over that area. Clothing that’s looser, with a dark colored belt cinched around the middle will trim your waist. This keeps the attention on your best features, which will likely be your bust and/or legs (typical of this body shape). V-necks and embellished tops will be the most flattering - anything that brings attention to your upper body. Some pieces to have in your closet are...

  • Shirts with flares, shoulder details or ruching (keeps the attention on your upper body and arms)
  • Boot cut or flare jeans, as they’ll add balance to your shape

  • Asymmetric or structured pencil and A-line skirts. Keep the skirts long to avoid highlighting your midsection and looking blocky.

Pear: One of the most common figure proportions of a person is the pear shape. The widest part of a this body shape is their hips, and their shoulders may be sloped. Legs are typically full or muscular, and given the bigger lower body, the waist tends to be more defined. The best way to balance out your shoulders are to accent your top half (ruffles work great for this, as do sequins and other sparkly attachments). and wear darker or slimming clothes on the bottom. Above else, make sure your top is well tailored - if your shoulders look slouchy or baggy, it makes your entire upper body look bad.
  • Detailed tops (ruffles, puffed sleeves, embellishments)
  • Rounded/Wide necklines

  • Wide/flared legged pants, boot cut or straight legged
  • A - Line, full circle or maxi skirts are virtually foolproof on your shape

Ex: J.Lo, Beyonce

Hourglass: If you have this type of body, your torso and your hips will have approximately the same width, and your waist will be relatively defined. This type of body shape is generally the easiest to dress due to its being the “classic body shape”. However, you’ll want to avoid stiff clothing, or anything that makes you look boxy and undefined. Soft, flowy fabrics will look best as they will accentuate your curves. Your waist is definitely something to be proud of, so don’t shy away from belts, and keep your top simpler to keep the attention on the waist.
Ex: Kim Kardashian,Marilyn Monroe
  • Anything waist defining - nipped or belted tops
  • Wrapped tops, sweaters and dresses

  • Bootcut, flare and widelegged jeans look the best on you
  • Skinny or wide belts
  • However, most people are typically a mix of the above categories, so don't worry if you don't seem to fit in just one category - it's totally normal.
